Pregnancy Test Information
A pregnancy test will determine if you are pregnant. It’s important to confirm your pregnancy right away.
The most common method of determining whether you are pregnant is to take an at-home pregnancy test. However, some home pregnancy tests are more sensitive than others. In other words, in some tests the amount of hCG needed to be detected in the urine to produce a positive test result is lower. To have an accurate result, the body must have enough time to build up enough hCG to trigger a positive result. During your visit, we will determine where you are in your cycle and perform a highly accurate clinic grade pregnancy test.
If a test is positive, it does not necessarily mean you have a positive intrauterine pregnancy. The ultrasound exam is a diagnostic procedure that can tell whether your pregnancy implanted inside your uterus. If no pregnancy is detected, this is when the blood test might be ordered.
Depending on how far along you are in your pregnancy, your COLFS Medical Clinic provider may recommend that you have an ultrasound, repeat a urine test in the hospital or clinic lab, or have a blood test to measure your hCG levels. hCG stand for human chorionic gonadotropin which is a hormone produced by placenta after implantation.
Q&A
How accurate are home pregnancy tests?
Pregnancy tests are very accurate – 97% accurate when used properly. Having a pregnancy test performed in house at a medical facility under laboratory conditions ensures the most accurate results, however it should be noted that a pregnancy and viability cannot be confirmed until an ultrasound is performed and the results verified. Before using a home pregnancy test, ensure that the expiration date has not passed.
Is there such thing as a false positive or false negative?
Although rare, there is a possibility that your test result is reflecting the wrong answer. A false positive occurs when the test gives a positive pregnancy result, but you are not actually pregnant. A false negative occurs when the test gives a negative pregnancy result, when you actually are pregnant. Depending on how you are administering the test and how far along your pregnancy is developed, there is a small chance the result may not be correct.
